Smartlead’s scores, and how few reviews stand behind some of them
Of the scores we could check, Trustpilot’s rests on the most reviews, 140. Capterra’s 4.3 rests on 7 reviews only. G2 blocks automated reading: its score shows as 4.5 in search results, Smartlead quotes "4.6 stars on G2", and the structured data of Smartlead’s home page claims 4.8 from 100,000 reviews, which is the number of customers it advertises, not a review count.

45% five stars, 47% one star: a split verdict
Trustpilot’s breakdown of Smartlead’s 140 reviews: 45% five stars, 2% four, 1% three, 5% two and 47% one star. Only 8% sit in the middle. People either get what they came for, fast sending at a low price, or run into a problem they could not solve with support.
Smartlead has claimed its Trustpilot profile and answers about 5% of negative reviews. That average of 2.9 is the figure to remember: it is the only one based on more than a handful of reviews that we could check.
What five-star reviewers praise
- Speed of setup. Connecting mailboxes and launching a first campaign takes little time, and the interface is described as easy to learn, which matches Capterra’s ease-of-use score.
- Unlimited mailboxes and rotation. The core promise holds for them: add mailboxes without paying more, and let Smartlead spread the sends.
- The unified inbox. Replies from every mailbox in one place, sorted by category.
- Spintax and the campaign AI. Varied wording and help writing and fixing campaigns.
- Price. Many find it cheaper than other cold email tools. Against Emelia, our figures confirm it for cold email alone from 4 to about 220 mailboxes (see pricing); lemlist is cheaper at some volumes (see Smartlead vs lemlist).
What one-star reviews report
- Support. Answers from a bot, slow replies, problems left unresolved. Customer service is also Capterra’s lowest sub-score.
- Billing. Charges after cancelling, or a cancellation that is hard to complete (see the next section).
- Bugs and failed sends. Campaigns that stop or emails that do not go out.
- Deliverability. Domains blacklisted after warm-up, DKIM records to set up again.
- Credits and limits. Credits used faster than expected, a price tied to the number of leads stored, poor exports.
- Integrations. The HubSpot integration comes up several times.
Charged after cancelling? What Smartlead’s terms and help center actually say
Billing complaints are easier to read once you know the rules Smartlead publishes:
- Plans renew automatically. Smartlead’s terms say it will "endeavour" to warn you before; the help center mentions a reminder email.
- Cancelling does not stop the current period. Base and Pro are cancelled in Settings, and the plan runs until the end of the period. Custom plans can only be cancelled through support.
- Refunds: two versions. The help center grants a full refund for 7 days after a new subscription (3 days after a renewal, provided the account has not been used); the terms of service, for their part, say fees are non-refundable. Add-ons are out in both cases: SmartProspect, servers, mailboxes and domains, tests, verification and calls.
- Mailboxes bought in the app are billed separately. SmartSenders mailboxes keep being charged each month until you delete them, even after the plan is cancelled; domains are paid for a year.
- Data goes after 2 weeks. Export before cancelling: Smartlead deletes the account’s data 2 weeks later.
Our take: a sender for agencies, not a LinkedIn tool
Smartlead fits
- Teams that only send cold email, from a few to a few hundred mailboxes: Smartlead costs less than Emelia between about 4 and 220 mailboxes.
- Agencies that resell sending under their own brand (client workspaces at $29 each on the pricing page; its FAQ mentions one free client on Pro).
- Anyone who wants a long trial: 14 days, no card.
Look elsewhere if
- LinkedIn is part of your outreach: Smartlead hands it to another tool.
- You store more than 2,000 contacts but send little: the contact cap pushes you up a plan.
- You need an API on the cheapest plan, or responsive support matters more than price.
Smartlead reviews: frequently asked questions
G2 blocks automated reading, so we could not check it directly. Search results show 4.5, with a number of reviews that varies from page to page; Smartlead itself says "4.6 stars on G2".
Because 47% of its 140 reviews give one star, with recurring complaints about support and billing after cancellation, against 45% five-star reviews. The average, 2.9, hides that split.
It depends on which Smartlead page you read. Under the help center, a new subscriber has 7 days to ask for a full refund (3 days after a renewal, if the account went unused); under the terms of service, fees are non-refundable. Either way, SmartProspect, servers, mailboxes and domains, tests, verification and calls are not paid back. The help center also lists reasons it turns down, such as disappointing results.
No native LinkedIn automation, 2,000 stored contacts on Base and 30,000 on Pro, no API or webhooks on Base, and verified emails included only from Unlimited Smart ($174 a month), according to its pricing page. Its home page and its comparison with lemlist promise unlimited leads and verified emails from the entry plan. Those three pages were read on October 6, 2026.
Emelia is a Smartlead competitor. We have tried to stay fair: every figure about Smartlead comes from its own website or public review sites.
